Meet the New Department Chair, Jeff Palmer

Photo of the new Biology Department Chair, Jeff Palmer. To all Biology,

It is an honor, a privilege, and a pleasure to acknowledge that on July 1, 2007, I began a three-year term as Chair of Biology. Looking back to when I started my first two terms as Chair, 11 years ago, it is deeply gratifying to see how far we've come as a department. We are significantly larger, almost 50% larger in both faculty size and number of undergraduate majors. More importantly, we are a better department in almost all respects. Working together with all of you, I look forward to helping our department become even better in teaching, research, and service.

We owe Beth Raff a huge debt of gratitude for her excellent leadership of this department over the past five years. Suffice it to say that she has more than earned the full-year sabbatical that she will enjoy this coming academic year!

Sincerely,
Jeff Palmer

Futures in Biology

The Futures in Biology lecture series will kick off again in the fall of 2007! We have an exciting, jam-packed schedule with many dynamic panelists. The Futures in Biology lecture series focuses on the wide variety of careers a student majoring in the biological sciences can undertake. Futures lectures provide a forum for undergraduate students in biology to interact with professionals, including individuals who were once students at IU, and learn about possible career options.

Futures in Biology is a collaboration between the Department of Biology, the Biology Club, and the Biotechnology Program. To view the Fall 2007 Futures in Biology lecture schedule, visit http://development.bio.indiana.edu/Futures/.

We want your input. E-mail any suggestions about possible Futures in Biology speakers or career interests to Christie Wahlert, the Life Sciences Marketing and Communications Specialist.

Watch for more information as the fall semester continues!
